01 · Study findings
What did the 476-prompt fintech Gemini study find?
Among named domains in Kojable’s preserved source-frequency output, PRNewswire appeared 84 times, Reddit 77 times and YouTube 72 times. The result shows a fragmented fintech source mix rather than one dominated by a single social or video platform.
An earlier version reported a “share of all supports” statistic. The retained research package does not contain the grounding_supports records required to reproduce that denominator, so the percentage and any argument dependent on it have been removed.
Kojable built 476 B2B-oriented prompts from companies represented in The Top 50 Financial Technology Companies of 2025. The prompt set covered payments, banking technology, fintech AI, lending, insurtech, investing, regtech and adjacent categories. It was collected on 14 January 2026 using gemini-3-flash-preview.
| Named source | Frequency | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| prnewswire.com | 84 | Press-release distribution. |
| reddit.com | 77 | Community discussion. |
| youtube.com | 72 | Video. |
| checkbook.io | 64 | Fintech company. |
| spreedly.com | 58 | Fintech company. |
| g2.com | 57 | Software reviews. |
| personetics.com | 54 | Fintech company. |
| auditoria.ai | 54 | Fintech company. |
| businesswire.com | 52 | Press-release distribution. |
Reddit and YouTube were part of the observed information environment, but neither dominated it. A press-release domain exceeded both individually, and specialist fintech sites appeared repeatedly. Frequency is descriptive: these counts do not prove that one source was more influential, trustworthy or commercially valuable than another.
Large-scale research published later in 2026 points in the same broad direction. Profound’s analysis of 11.84 billion citations across 29 industries and eight models found material variation by industry and model; it classified 69% of Gemini citations in its dataset as brand-site citations. That corroborates the need for vertical and platform context, not Kojable’s exact counts.
02 · Retrieval output
What does Search result: 2,177 mean?
The 2,177 records labelled Search result represent retrieval-related output across the prompts. They are not a publisher domain, so Kojable does not rank them beside Reddit, YouTube, PRNewswire or other named sources.
Google’s Gemini grounding documentation explains that a configured model can generate search queries, process results and return grounded responses with citations. The retained Search result count does not independently reveal how many prompts triggered search, how many queries were generated, how many support records resulted or how many source links were attached to each support.
Search result should not be described as Gemini “trusting itself”. It is a separate retrieval-related category whose underlying events cannot be reconstructed from the preserved frequency label alone.
03 · Denominators
What percentage of AI citations come from Reddit?
There is no defensible universal Reddit citation percentage. Any figure depends on the AI system, prompt and industry mix, collection period, counting unit and denominator.
A study may measure Reddit links as a share of all citation links, responses containing at least one Reddit citation, unique Reddit URLs or citation-linked response-text supports. Those ratios answer different questions and are not interchangeable.
The metric formerly reported by Kojable as “share of all supports” would require Reddit-assigned grounding_support records divided by all eligible grounding_support records. One support can point to multiple source chunks, so a support-to-source-link ratio would require another denominator. The retained package contains grounding_chunks but not the original grounding_supports, making the earlier total of 6,436 independently unreproducible.
A citation-share statistic should travel with its numerator, denominator, analytical unit, platform, prompt set and collection date.
04 · Comparability
Why do Reddit AI citation studies seem to contradict each other?
Most apparent contradictions come from studies measuring different platforms, industries, prompt intents, dates and citation units. A January fintech Gemini snapshot and a later cross-industry result can both be accurate for their declared samples.
| Research | Scope | Relevant observation |
|---|---|---|
| Kojable, January | 476 B2B fintech prompts in one Gemini model | Reddit recorded 77 source-frequency occurrences; PRNewswire 84 and YouTube 72. |
| Tinuiti Q1 | Nine categories and seven AI platforms or features | Social represented 9% of January citations in its dataset; AI Overviews cited social more than four times as often as Gemini. |
| BrightEdge | Large prompt sets where Reddit was cited | Reddit use differed substantially between ChatGPT and AI Overviews. |
| Profound | 11.84 billion citations, 29 industries and eight models | Citation mix varied by both model and industry. |
| Semrush data reported by The Verge | Broad May citation dataset | Reddit was the most-cited individual domain across several major AI systems in that analysis. |
Platform changes the answer. Products from the same company can use different retrieval and answer systems. Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as Search experiences, while Gemini developer grounding has its own workflow.
Intent changes the answer. “Does this payment API support network tokens?” calls for different evidence from “What is it like implementing this payment provider?” Practitioner discussion is more relevant to the second.
Industry and time change the answer. Profound found company-operated sites were the largest citation bucket for the median customer in 24 of 29 industries. Tinuiti’s Q2 report also recorded a marked decline in Perplexity’s social-source use compared with earlier measurements. A global leaderboard is a starting hypothesis, not a vertical strategy.
05 · Platform finding
Does Gemini cite Reddit?
Yes. Reddit appeared 77 times in Kojable’s preserved January 2026 fintech source-frequency output, establishing its presence without establishing a universal Gemini citation share.
Later evidence shows why the date and sample matter. Semrush data reported by The Verge placed Reddit first among individual domains in its broader May Gemini dataset. Profound’s April-to-July analysis simultaneously classified 69% of Gemini citations as brand-operated sites.
Those findings can coexist. One domain can rank first while a much larger long tail of company sites collectively accounts for most citations. “Most-cited individual domain” and “largest source category” are different claims.
06 · Channel decisions
Should fintech companies prioritise Reddit for AEO or GEO?
Sometimes, but not by default. Reddit deserves investment when it recurs for commercially important buyer questions and contributes relevant practitioner evidence that owned documentation or formal sources cannot supply.
| Buyer question | Reddit priority | Evidence to investigate first |
|---|---|---|
| What does this API support? | Low initially | Product and API documentation |
| Is this provider compliant with a requirement? | Low initially | First-party evidence, regulators and standards |
| Which provider fits a specific use case? | Test | Comparisons, specialist press, reviews and practitioner discussion |
| What is implementation actually like? | Medium to high | Customer evidence, forums, Reddit and video |
| Which provider do practitioners recommend? | High monitoring value | Reviews, communities and independent comparisons |
| What problems do customers report? | High monitoring value | Reviews, support discussions, forums and Reddit |
This is a testing framework, not a prediction. Technical and compliance claims often need current authoritative evidence. Experience and recommendation questions are more likely to benefit from practitioner discussion. The useful question is whether Reddit recurs for the buyer decisions and AI systems that matter to the company.
07 · Access and ranking
Does Google’s Reddit partnership mean Reddit receives preferential AI treatment?
No public evidence from the partnership announcement establishes preferential ranking or citation treatment. Structured access to Reddit content and a guarantee that Reddit will be selected for a particular answer are different propositions.
Google announced expanded access to Reddit’s Data API in February 2024, describing more efficient access to fresher, structured content and signals that can help Google understand it. The announcement did not promise ranking preference.
In August 2026, a Google spokesperson told The Verge that Google’s AI Search features do not aim to show content from a particular site and that Reddit receives no special preference in its ranking systems. Strong access can make content available without making it relevant to every query.
08 · Practical workflow
What should fintech marketers do instead of following a generic Reddit playbook?
Build an evidence strategy around real buyer questions: establish a cross-platform baseline, record the recurring sources, fix owned evidence, investigate relevant third-party gaps and retest comparable prompts.
- Define buyer decisions. Include category, use-case, technical, integration, compliance, comparison, implementation and recommendation questions. Do not treat lightly reworded prompts as distinct needs.
- Establish a baseline. Run the questions across the AI systems your buyers use. Record named domains, pages, source type, supported claim, competitors and model-specific changes.
- Diagnose evidence gaps. Separate outdated or unclear owned information from weak third-party corroboration. Keep source-frequency counts distinct from response-level and support-level metrics.
- Improve the evidence. Make important product, integration, security and compliance facts explicit. Pursue legitimate third-party evidence only where it helps answer a real information need.
- Verify and retest. Rerun comparable prompts and record whether the answer, brand inclusion, source mix, factual claims and competitor framing changed.
Google’s guidance for generative Search continues to emphasise foundational SEO, crawlability, useful non-commodity content and clear site structure. It says there is no special AI-only schema requirement and discourages attempts to manufacture inauthentic mentions.
An AI answer describes a payments platform using an outdated two-year-old announcement. The team finds that current product pages do not clearly explain its enterprise positioning. Updating the owned evidence and relevant public profiles is more defensible than opening promotional Reddit accounts, because the diagnosed gap is inconsistent product information.
Do not create fake users, scripted customer conversations or undisclosed promotional threads. Contribute legitimate expertise transparently and use existing discussions to understand buyer language and unresolved questions.
A 7-, 14- or 30-day check can be a useful monitoring cadence after a material evidence change, but it is not a guaranteed AI-update timeline. Before-and-after movement remains observational unless the design supports a causal conclusion.
10 · Measurement strategy
How should fintech teams measure AI citation strategy?
Measure citations inside a broader AI-representation baseline that also covers brand inclusion, recommendation, factual accuracy, competitive context, source stability and answer quality.
| Metric | Definition | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Brand mention rate | Share of eligible answers mentioning the company | Measures inclusion. |
| Direct citation rate | Share citing the company or a declared evidence source | Measures observed source attribution. |
| Recommendation rate | Share of relevant answers recommending the company | Measures commercial inclusion. |
| Entity accuracy | Share of tested claims that are materially accurate | Measures representation quality. |
| Competitor co-mentions | Frequency of named competitors appearing alongside the company | Measures comparison context. |
| Source overlap | Repeated use of the same sources across related prompts | Identifies concentrated evidence patterns. |
| Retrieval volatility | Change in sources across comparable runs | Measures stability. |
Every result should retain the prompt set, platform and surface, model where known, date, geography where relevant, run count, denominator and counting rule. Without those fields, a precise percentage may be less informative than it appears.
The evidence published after Kojable’s January study strengthens its central conclusion. Citation mix varies by industry and model, Reddit can become more prominent in later broad datasets, and platform source behaviour can move within months. The useful update is not “the January finding was wrong”; it is that Reddit citation behaviour is conditional and the conditions matter.
This dated, model-specific observational study does not establish that Reddit is unimportant, that the result applies to later Gemini versions or that Gemini behaves like AI Overviews. It also cannot show that frequency measures influence, that a cited page was used for training or that changing one source will change a future answer. Its B2B fintech prompt set should not be generalised automatically to personal finance, retail banking, investing or crypto.
The retained package also cannot reconstruct the original support-share denominator. Kojable therefore reports preserved source-frequency counts and excludes that unreproducible percentage.
Measure your prompts before choosing your channels. Observe the sources used for real buyer questions, separate owned evidence from third-party corroboration, fix the gaps that matter and retest comparable prompts.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
What are AI citations?
AI citations are source references or links surfaced with an AI-generated response. Their format varies by product, so a study should define what counts before calculating a rate or share.
Is Reddit important for fintech AEO or GEO?
It can be, especially for experience, recommendation and practitioner questions. It should not automatically outrank technical documentation, regulatory evidence or specialist sources for other intents.
Are Reddit and YouTube the dominant AI citation sources?
Not universally. Both can be prominent, but citation mix changes by AI system, industry, intent, date and analytical unit.
Does Google prefer Reddit because of its licensing partnership?
The partnership provides structured Data API access but does not establish preferential ranking. Google has publicly said Reddit receives no special preference in its ranking systems.
Do companies need special schema to be cited by Google AI?
No. Google says there is no special structured-data requirement for its generative Search experiences. Standard technical accessibility, useful content and valid structured data for normal Search features remain the foundation.
Can a citation study show which sources were used for model training?
No. A citation study records sources surfaced in or around observed answers. Training inclusion is a separate question and cannot be inferred from citation frequency.
